SpinLaunch, Backed By Google And Kleiner Perkins, Gets DOD Contract
Long Beach-based SpinLaunch, a space launch services provider which recently relocated from Silicon Valley to Long Beach, reported on Wednesday that it has been awarded a launch prototype contract from the Department of Defense (DOD). The startup--which is backed by $40M in funding from Airbus Ventures, Google Ventures and Kleiner Perkins--said the contract came from the DOD's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Size of that new contract was not announced. SpinLaunch said it has developed a kinetic energy-based launch system for launching small satellites. The company said it moved in January from Silicon Valley to a new, 140,000 square foot headquarters in Long Beach.
