SDG&E Aims At Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 2045
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), the electric and gas utility which serves the San Diego region, says it is pledging to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2045. According to the company, as part of that effort, it is developing two new hydrogen pilot projects, has nearly completed an additional battery storage facility, and is piloting a program to use electric school buses for vehicle-to-grid efforts. SDG&E called getting to net zero GHG emissions by 2045 a "moonshot challenge". SDG&E follows a similar announcement by Southern California Gas (SoCalGas). Those utilities--and others--are following California mandate to become net zero emissions by 2045. Natural gas utilities have felt particular pressure as environmental groups and lawmakers have been pushing to phase out the use of gas in both transportation and buildings, as it is a potent greenhouse gas prior to use, and still emits pollution when it is burnt.
