Scientists Set New Internet2 Speed Record

Pasadena-based Caltech (www.caltech.edu), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), as well as AMD, Cisco, Microsoft Research, Newisys, and S2io announced that the organizations have set a new speed record for transmitting information over Internet2, the new second generation Internet currently under development. According to the companies, the team transferred 859 gigabytes of data in less than 17 minutes at a rate of 6.63 gigabits per second between CERN in Geneva and Caltech in Pasadena. The transfer was made as part of a R&D program to create a new high-speed global network. Current speeds of the Internet are far slower, particularly over long distances. R&D institutions are developing the new Internet2 to support high speed transfers for clustered and grid computing projects for particle physics, astronomy, bioinformatics, global climate modeling, and seismology.
